Did you notice the little voice at the back of your mind that said something like, ‘Yeah right’, or ‘Not in this lifetime’. Or maybe those simple sentences brought some powerful emotions closer to the surface without really understanding why. This is the voice of your subconscious mind revealing the patterns and beliefs that run your life.
Your subconscious is, from a processing point of view, millions of times more powerful than your conscious mind. It runs pretty much all your bodily functions without you even noticing and it is the storehouse of all of your memory. While your conscious mind has trouble remembering phone numbers or items on a shopping list, your subconscious takes care of practically everything and forgets nothing. From the smallest experiences to the most traumatic events your subconscious remembers everything in order to keep you safe from pain and harm and steer you towards pleasure and joy. This all happens below the level of your conscious awareness.
Freud was among the first to show that experiences that are banished to the subconscious mind (repressed) and could emerge later in the form of mental or physical problems. He established that suppressed or forgotten emotional events could influence our physical health and well-being.
More recently, research has shown that the unresolved and suppressed events from our past can come back and bite us many years later in the form of physical and emotional problems.
From early childhood, and throughout our lives, we are subjected to experiences and events that begin to form a picture of how the world is for us. If an event is traumatic, or is repeated often enough, it forms a pattern that eventually becomes a strong belief. For the most part, we are not consciously aware of these beliefs, but these subconscious programs run our lives just the same. In particular the experiences from our early childhood (below the age of 6) are incredibly powerful as we do not yet have the faculty of conscious reasoning. This means that any lessons we learn from our parents, teachers, siblings etc are more or less downloaded to our hard drive and accepted as true without any conscious scrutiny at all.
If the events and experiences from your past are nurturing and full of love then your subconscious beliefs will reflect that. If however, your past experiences are ones of neglect, abuse, struggle or pain then you may be running subconscious beliefs like ‘the world is a cold unsafe place’, or ‘I’m not good enough’.
These limiting beliefs are like weeds in your subconscious that, left unattended, can cause all sorts of physical and emotional problems. So how do you weed out a subconscious negative thought?
Well that’s where EFT is so effective. It works directly with the physical symptoms and emotions that are generated by your limiting subconscious beliefs and neutralizes the disturbance in your energy system and in the other systems of your body.
